Carlisle Public School - Middle School Class Events Overview
In an effort to increase awareness of middle school class activities, the Carlisle PTO has appointed a class representative for each grade, in addition to the existing class treasurer position, to communicate with parents of the class. Listed below is a summary of middle school events for each grade, but you can expect more detailed information about events to come directly from your class representative. Please click here for Class Representative and Treasurer contact information.
6th GRADE
Starting in 6th grade a bank account for class funds is opened for the grade and held under the umbrella of the Carlisle PTO account. Traditionally, the primary income for the treasury comes from the proceeds of the annual Spaghetti Supper which is the middle school’s biggest fundraiser and depends on every student and every parent to play a role. This event, while supported by the school, is organized, sponsored, and carried out by the parents and students in the 6th grade class. Chairpersons for the Spaghetti Supper are recruited by the class representative, class treasurer and Carlisle PTO Vice President of Middle School and need to be in place before the end of the 5th grade school year due to the timing of the Spaghetti Supper in October.
Additionally, 6th grade students traditionally run a concession stand during intermission of the 7th Grade Play (7GP) generating some monies to add to the overall class fund. Depending on interest, the 6th grade class often has an ice cream social at the end of the school year which is paid for out of the class account. All of the money raised by the 6th grade is used to pay the transportation costs to/from Outdoor Education, to provide the capital needed to put on the 7th Grade Play, and to pay for a variety of events in 8th grade.
7th GRADE
Traditionally, the event for this class has been the 7th Grade Play (7GP). It is not a school-run activity but rather an extracurricular activity led by parent volunteers, which makes use of a generous share of school resources such as the auditorium, the maintenance staff, and various lines of communication. Because of this, it often has the appearance of an activity run by the school, but it is an important distinction to understand that the 7GP is run entirely separate from the school administration or staff and that student participation, while encouraged, is optional. The goal of the 7th grade event is to provide team-building and a learning experience for the kids. Chairpersons for the 7th grade event are recruited by the class representative, class treasurer and the Carlisle PTO Vice President of Middle School. Ideally the chairs are in place by the end of the prior school year. Expenses incurred during the production of the play are paid out of the class treasury and then recouped through ticket sales. The play is not a fundraiser.
Other activities in 7th grade include helping with day-of graduation activities such as distributing graduation programs, helping with seating, serving food at the reception, etc. 7th grade parents are also asked to chaperone the 8thgrade graduation dance which is usually held the Friday before graduation.
8th GRADE
The primary class event for 8th grade is the Graduation Ceremony, traditionally held on the evening of the last day of school. Carlisle Public School administration sets the date and time of graduation and organizes graduation rehearsal activities. In February, the class representative, class treasurer and Carlisle PTO Vice President of Middle School recruit chairpersons to spearhead graduation festivities. The class treasury built up over three years will be used to reduce the cost of the 8th grade class trip, as well as to fund the class gift and the graduation ceremony. Additional activities relating to graduation festivities will be organized and funded by 8th grade families.
